Townley Benson was born in Port Maitland, [Ontario] on April 23, 1848. He was an itinerant artist who was in and out of southern California after 1893. He painted desert landscapes around Palm Springs and genre paintings of Mexicans and other ethnic types. His works are rare. According to his family, he died in Saltillo, Mexico on July 15, 1907.
